Best Practices for Working Remotely While on Vacation

June 5, 2015

School is out for the summer and that means you and your family will likely take at least a few days for vacation. The fortunate thing about owning your business is it’s up to you when you take time off. However, the bad news is that you will likely still need to check in on your business while you are away. If your business can’t run on autopilot without you here are some ideas for working remotely while still enjoying your vacation time.

Let your clients know in advance. Most people will do their best to avoid emailing or calling if you let them know before you leave that you will be on vacation.

Check your emails and voicemails in the morning before heading out for the day and once at night before going to bed. Try to get up at least an hour before everyone else to nip this in the bud before the fun. I know, no one likes to have an alarm clock set while they are on vacation, but hey- this is what you signed up for when you decided to be an entrepreneur.

No cell phones at the pool or during meal times. Let it go to voicemail! Or better yet, use an answering service like ours. It’s more than likely that it can wait a few hours. Obviously if someone keeps calling over and over you may need to put a fire out, but for the most part you can usually get away with waiting to call back.

Try to handle all major projects/ shipments/ major issues before you leave. This may not be possible depending on the current state of your business, but plan this vacation as far in advance as possible so that you can make arrangements for this much needed and much deserved time off with your family.
